Wow, without even looking at my picks, it appears I had an awful night. But that doesn't matter. Why? Because the Islanders and Penguins battle was SO AWESOME. It used to be more common to see two teams (with dislike for one another) to have an utter complete chaotic brawl. This was last night. It was clearly a mix of two things: the Brent Johnson one-punch knock out of Rick "Injured Reserve" DiPietro as well as the Islanders having their way with the Pens score wise. If you haven't seen it, watch it: <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/bjqoJHq-KCk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
It's hilarious watching Maxime Talbot turtle the entire night. This from a guy who left Blake Comeau concussed earlier in the game with a hit. A little classless but almost understandable was the challenge and attack from Michael Haley on Brent Johnson. Then again Johnson and Godard (a fighter) provided a 2 on 1 beating to Haley. It's not too cool to double up a guy, but if you run a goalie, what can you expect? This whole game seemed to be a statement by the New York Islanders as it seemed the Penguins were laughing at them in their last match. Heck, Brent Johnson and Marc-Andre Fleury enjoyed a laugh in that game. I can totally see why New York wanted some validity. If only Matt Cooke was around to get a beating. Sigh.
This game absolutely had it all. This is what people look for in the game. Hear that, NHL? If you listen to the fans, the entire video, they're on their feet. Let the players take care of the policing. Should this happen all the time? No, obviously I don't think so, but these type of games are truly a treat. Let the boys skate some old time hockey time to time.
This game also took the spotlight from the return of Peter Forsberg. I enjoyed Peter when he was with the Flyers so it's nice to see him back in the game. This especially if he's able to get through the rest of the season (and possibly longer). Unfortunately, the Avalanche were pretty stale against the Blue Jackets. Rumor is he might be moved before the trade deadline, but I personally don't think that happens. I think he's back just to see what his body can handle. Going to a team that has Cup aspirations just doesn't seem like something he'd do at this point. He's pretty much accomplished everything possible.
Anyway, let's look at my results:
Format ==> Game : My Pick : Winner : Result : My Season Record
OT/W for if my guess was right, but my pick won in overtime.
OT/L for if my guess was right, but my pick lost in overtime.
SO/W for if my pick was right, but only account a shootout.
SO/L....I think you get the point.
Bruins vs Red Wings : Bruins : Red Wings : Wrong : 14-11
Sharks vs Devils : Sharks : Devils : Wrong : 14-12
Penguins vs Islanders : Penguins : Islanders : Wrong : 14-13
Avalanche vs Blue Jackets : Blue Jackets : Blue Jackets : Correct : 15-13
Rangers vs Thrashers : Rangers : Thrashers : Wrong : 15-14
Wild vs Blues : Wild : Wild : Correct : 16-14 (SO/W)
Stars vs Blackhawks : Stars : Stars : Correct : 17-14 (SO/W)
Flames vs Ducks : Ducks : Ducks : Correct : 18-14 (OT/W)
I actually thought I did a lot worse, but this wasn't too bad. I'll take an even 4-4 draw.
Today's picks for Saturday 2/12/2011
Kings vs Caps ==> Capitals (was 1-1 through 2 periods when pick was made)
Senators vs Oilers ==> Oilers
Maple Leafs vs Canadiens ==> Canadiens
Hurricanes vs Lightning ==>Lightning
Blackhawks vs Coyotes ==> Coyotes
Avalanche vs Predators ==> Predators
Blues vs Wild ==> Blues
Flames vs Canucks ==> Canucks
A lot of my picks are based on many of these teams having played last night. That might come back to bite me, but we'll see.
Later.
